Information:
Chinese hibiscus is a small flowering tree. Its fragrant flowers are known around the world and give rise to many cultivated variants. Chinese hibiscus is the national flower of Malaysia and is featured on Malaysian coins. Although the Latin name Hibiscus rosa-sinensis means "the rose of China," it is not related to true roses.

Tips from Garden Coaches:
Most hibiscus plants, with their large and bright flowers, are often used as garden plants to create a tropical style.

Attract Birds:

  • Chinese hibiscus produces stunning flowers whose trumpet-shaped petals and long stamens attract a multitude of nectar-seeking birds, as well as butterflies and bees.
  • Hummingbirds are drawn to their bright colors, especially shrubs that are bursting with red, pink, and orange. Chinese hibiscus grown closer to wetlands may provide nesting sites for some birds, particularly red-winged blackbirds.
  • In winter the flowers sprout and provide food for blue-winged teal, goldfinch, pintail and wood duck.

Name Story:
Dixie rosemallow
It used to be one of the most common flowers in the southeastern United States, and Dixie is the informal name of the country in that area. Hence, it is known as Dixie rosemallow to most people.

Shoeblack plant, Shoe-flower:
The most attractive part of the plant is its large trumpet-shaped petals, which are very distinct. Once blended, the petals yield a delicate but inconsistent black syrup. Resourceful people have discovered that its black sap can serve the specific purpose of cleaning shoes. So it happened that it was called shoe black plant or shoe flower.

Interesting Facts:
Hibiscus' appearance is enthusiastic and bold, but it has a unique flower heart formed by the smaller stamens joined and wrapped around the larger stamens. The structure is quite delicate, just like the delicate heart under the boldness. It is said that the local girls put it behind their left ear to indicate "I hope to have a lover" and behind their right ear to express "I already have a lover". So behind both ears? Maybe they want to say "I have a lover but I'm hoping for another"

Endangered Species:
The wild population of the Chinese hibiscus has been listed as threatened in the IUCN Red List since 2018. It is listed as Critically Endangered, meaning it faces an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. The population trend of this species has been declining in recent years. There are approximately 0-49 mature individuals on all worlds.

Artistic Value:
Chinese hibiscus is often printed on postage stamps
Pests and diseases:
powdery mildew; Aphids, scale insects, mealybugs, whiteflies
